I know this is off the subject here at this board, I have been making and selling my own hay for about 4 years now, Iam not a newbie to the farm equipment and putting up hay. But now my old lady(excuse me the boss)wants to have cattleon the place. I dont mind the notion, but i would at least like to be able to make some money at doing it. THe only cattle i have had has been at least 3 steers for beef. Heres what iam thinking, i have 35 acres, make the hay like always during the summer, put it in the barn, then around fall of the year buy some cattle maybe 30 head and keep them untill about spring. How does this sound. Buying the cattle wont be a problem i live close to a Livestock Auction Barn. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

The only difference is i bale all sqaure bales, and my neighbors say my that my place and hay bales could hold about 20 head of calves. Thanks for all the info guys, iam going to give this cattle thing a try this fall, one of my neighbors said he would be more then glad to help me out untill i learned the hang of things. thanks again guys

1. Where do you live? Makes a big difference - climate.

2. Do you wish to fatten them up, you could privately sell 'organic' sides. This will be more work/ more salesmanship, but if you live where there is demand & a local butcher shop, you can do well with this.

3. It is generally cheaper to let the cattle harvest the hay themselves, when you have it baled & in storage, better money to sell the hay? I'd work on a grazing program 'here', depends on your climate. I'm assuming you have small square bales?

Here in VA thats what most of us cattleman do. I by steers/bulls in september usually through october.(takes awhile to buy 125 head)i try and buy around 275lb to 325lb cattle. I dont pay over $300 a head. I have found that as long as i stay under paying $300 a head i can make at least $100 a head when i sell the cattle around the Last of March to the Second week of April. (usually the first week in April.) They will avg. 450 to 550 lbs.

With your thrity acres, and making the hay,( i assume that u avg. 2 rolls to the acre so u get about 60 rolls) That is enough to hold about 30 head for 5 to 6 months. If they weigh around 250 to 325 lbs when u buy them. U should be able to put 100 lbs on them.

Since u live close to the Sale Barn, after u buy them i would still go to the sales about a starting around march and keep an eye on the market to see when it goes up and goes down and then sell when u see them reach the highest.

It all depends on the person, if u dont know what your doing or dont have farmer friends to give u a helping hand now and then and some advice u wont make money.

P.s If farmers didnt make money in cattle then how come so many farms have cattle.

I take it casey u had no idea what u were doin with the cattle.

Don't know where you live but here you can't raise many cows on 35 acres. My wife is from Indiana any you could do a lot better then here. They figure cows in AUM (animal unit month) or how many acres needed to support a cow/calf pair, per month. Hear it would be a bout 30 acres per pair. You can check with your County Extension Agent for your area. Another question is your hay yield. If feeding you need to figure about 2.5 lbs per hundred weight per day (about 20 to 25 lbs of hay or hay-grain combo per day per animal. Calves are good. If you can buy a producing milk cow, you may be able to put two to three bucket calves on her. Buy them about a week old and sell them at about 500 lbs. There's ways to make it. Just don't get too far in debt, that's what kills most ranchers.

it seems to me that you maybe doing it backwards. let the calves do the harvesting. I buy calves in Feb. (MO.) and sell them in August or early sept. I have made money every year for the last 15. look for managed grazing sites. ie: STOCKMAN GRASS FARMER.
