Everyone says buy a 'heavy duty' one or be sorry later. I agree, but how do you determine what is heavy duty? I know I want a clutch instead of a shear bolt(already made that mistake once.) I also want an older more affordable used one instead of the new ones which are thousands of dollars.

Thanks

I disagree with the idea that everyone should always buy a heavy duty cutter, or anything else for that matter. You should buy what you need for your use. If you intend to cut a lot of heavy brush and saplings, by all means go heavy. If you will primarily cut grass and occasional light brush, go light. I run a 6' Howse light duty which I cut primarily pasture. But I also sometimes use it to cut brush near my creek. It will cut 4' to 5' cedars with no problem and I only paid $500 for it new. It does everything I need and more for lower cost and lighter weight. Don't be swayed by the heavier the better argument unless you really need it.

I don't have nearly the experience of most of the guys on this site, so I'll defer to them, but I bought a 60" Howse brush hog for next to nothing that has been doing an admirable job of actually clearing land over the last couple of months. Brush, small trees, rocks, teeny little hills, it all seems to just go away with that thing. I know it'll wear out sooner, but I'll just buy another when it does. I'm really happy with it. (Especially the price!) .

James, I purchased a cutter about three months ago. I opted for a "medium duty" Rhino. I'm not pushing the brand but several issues lead me to this particular purchase.

The cutter I bought has a 5' cutting width, a 10ga. deck with 1/4" sides and replaceable skids. All welded, and welded very well. Deflector chains front and back with 3 1/2" blades. 90 hp gearbox.

Weight of the unit is around 850 lbs. This was a very important concideration for my tractor, Ford 3600. It won't handle anything heaver without additional weight on the front end.

I was looking for the largest hp gearbox my tractor would handle. My Ford is 40 hp at the PTO. Like I said above, the unit I bought has a 90 hp gearbox and is rated to cut 2" material. I haven't had any trouble cutting 2" saplings yet.

Most of the "heavy duty" models were frankly, just too heavy for my tractor unless I went with a drag type. I ended up spending $1500.00 for a new one here in central Texas.

Anyway good luck,

mjgtexas

James, I just went through this this past spring. I looked at those "cheepies" TSC, General Store..etc. sells. NOT FOR ME. I started looking at auctions and passed a few up that I Prob should have bought. BUT... I started narrowing sights on J.D. 709. HEAVY DUTY. But when I went to ask price ...for used it was about 2200.00 for a 4-5 year old used. So I contacted my J.D. dealer that had a 709 and asked how much, etc. and for that 2200.00 I could buy and did buy a MX7 brand spanken new. So far so good Very nice cutter basically been using mine for heavy mowing and tree trimming....HA

I run one of the cheaper brands. But I can see the quality in some brands like Rhino, like full weld beads, thicker guage metal so on. But my old cheap brand may have bad rust spots, bent tonge, leaky gear case, wobbly wheels, but she still cuts the brush.
