Would someone talk about the down sides of disc mowers? What don't they do well(turns, speed, heavy vs light grass...) that another style would be better for? We know the price problem but why else wouldn't I want one?

WE use a Vicon 7' unit and it has served us well. It's true, you can and will get dirty from dirt, snad, ant hills, etc flying from the mower. However, I have never had anything serious hit me, but that's just luck, I suppose. One thing to consider, in some locations, the type of soil makes ant nests impossible to mow over with a sickle mower. Here in southcentral Texas, some of the sticky blackland will clog a sickle mower way too often to make it an option. A disc mower will mow through anything, wet, dry, thick or thin. We run ours with a 40 horse John Deere 2040, and it is a touch underpowered and underweigthed, but still works well. All that said, since we bought a NH Haybine two years ago, the disc mower has been used only two or three times and spent the rest of the time in the shed.....

Wore out a Tarrup (12-15 yrs), wore out a Bush Hog (10-12 yrs); now using John Deere; except for where I need a mower/conditioner, I wouldn't consider anything except a disc mower.

I work for a custom hay outfit. We use disk mowers exclusively. Yeah they can throw rocks, but keeping the tarp in place can help protect you. I'm using a 9 foot Heston 1007 with a 4020, so you have to match the disc mower size to your tractor. Blades do wear as fast, I think as lawn mower blades do. But we aren't as concerned here because we aren't doing lawns, we just want to put the hay down. As we call it, a pasture as smooth as glass, I can cut in 6th gear.

I had one for a couple of months, traded it back in. I had two problems.

Mainly, it was too heavy for my tractor and made me SERIOUSLY uncomfortable on any land that was not absolutely table-top flat. Of course, that can be overcome by sizing the machine to your tractor properly. (My tractor was too small for even the smallest available machine)

Secondly, in the short time I had it, I was not at all impressed with blade wear. Individually, the blades were not awfully expensive, but when you had to replace ALL of them after nearly every job, it got old quick. I wanted the machine specifically for mowing roadside where a machine offset to the side is required. Either the machine or the blades weren't up to the task. It's possible that more rugged knives are available that would cure this problem as well.

In short, with my tractor and my intended use, it ws not satisfactory.

I've never used one. With that, 2 other issues:

I hear they can really toss rocks - nothing works well in rocks, not sure if it's better to bust guards & sickles on them, or shoot them around like baseballs & flailing metal....

Where I live, somehow a great many beer bottles end up in the road ditches. I'm not sure where they come from. But, the spinning disks make a whole lot of broken glass out of them. Not so good.

Otherwise I see the neighbors go through anything at mostly any speed with them....
