Apart from the standard pto speeds, which your machine was designed to be run at---either 1000 or 540, USE THE TACH on your tractor to set the engine speed so that your tractor provides "RATED SPEED". There are MANY tractors which will operate with their engines at a speed which is faster than what will produce 540 or 1000 rpm pto.

You notice that sometimes in the HP specifications, there will be a listing for MAX PTO HP and a different one called RATED PTO HP, which is usually a few percent LESS than the MAX.

My 4020 for example is "rated" at 2200rpm, yet will rev to 2500rpm. I use the 2200 rpm speed for pto work, like when using the moco or the baler.

Yup- standard pto speed is generally achieved at less than maximum engine rpm- for older tractors without tachs- proper pto speed is a bit less than full throttle. Can be checked with a handheld tach, held against the pto shaft in the chamfered hole left from machining the shaft at the factory. Or just run the throttle at 80-90%, you'll at least be in the right neighborhood.

Standard pto speeds are 540 rpm for the 14 spline shaft and 1000 rpm for the 21 spline shaft. Harvesters are made to run at standard pto speeds.
