I have a 5 ft bush hog and the blades are blunt not sharp like a lawn mower. Would it hurt anything to sharpen them as you do a lawn mower blade? I will be mowing grass and weeds mainly.

Thanks 420Bill

420Bill, I have run more things through an ol JD
7 ft , 3pt shredder run by a IH 966, than I can
mention. Besides grass/weeds, large Ceader trees
{in Cen.Texas 10 ft bushes} Limestone rocks-the size of 5 gal buckets, roofing tin ,Barbed wire
and the list goes on, and on!!! My point is sharp blades are always best. Too keep them sharp , Hard Face the edge with Hard Facing rods , dress the edge , you are good to go. The hardfaceing will be the material that
actualy will be cutting, notsofter material of the blades. My $.02

PS.... Happy 4th of July to Ya'll

I get my bush hog blades sharped every year. I also own a 5 foot one. After a few years i have to replace then because they've been sharped to much.

Hi Bill, Sharpened blades are great for grass & weeds but if you're going to be cutting brush the sharp stubs left sticking up a few inches are murder on tires. Joe

I'll second this for the dull(rounded) blade. If you mow any brush check out how the stumps look like they have been exploded after cut with the "Dull" blade. Like previous poster after you have ruined a tire or two on a sharp stump you get the message. This is why it's called a bush hog and not a finsh mower. Good Luck.

I have a Brush Hog SQ72 and I stand it up with the front end loader and sharpen the blades with a 4 1/2" grinder.

A local landscaper near me was killed doing that a few years ago. Had the mower up and leaning on the bucket and somehow it slipped off and crushed him.
