Hi Everybody.

Just recently got my first tractor and bush-hog(used). Went to check the earl (oil -I'm from NY originally)and when I opened the plug (top one) on the gear box, the oil started spurting out, as if it were under pressure. I just tightened the plug back up....as it was obvious there was oil in there! Now that the weather has gotten hotter, I just noticed that there's oil on top of the deck, which seems to have come from the aforementioned plug- My question: Why is there so much pressure in my gearbox, that it's pi....errr....uh....spurting out even through a closed plug??? Help!.....anybody?

The gearbox should have a vent in the top fill plug. That is to relieve pressure built up as the oil heats up and expands. Make sure the vent is not stopped up. Be sure it dosen't have too much oil. The oil level should be just even with the horizonal shaft in the gearbox. Grease might work in the gearbox but it would be better to use gear oil.

The top plug on the gearbox should be a vent plug. You can make one by drilling about a 1/8" diameter hole in the pipe plug, insert a cotter key, bend it over. That relieves the pressure built up by heat of operating, wnd the key blocks water from getting into the gearbox.

Hey....a fellow Kentuckian!

THAT really sounds like my problem- a stopped up vent or too much oil- I will check it out tomorrow!

(I'm betting on a little of both!)

Thanks!

The top most plug should be the fill plug and it should have another smaller plug about in the center of the gearbox to check it at. What brand of mower is it? When we bought a new Rhino several years ago we asked what weight oil too use and they told us to just pack that sucker full of gun grease. Thats what they used. WE, don't have the mower any longer but its just down the road and still going strong. Never had to add anymore grease too it as I recall. Hope this helps.

Grease-gun grease, Ay? I may give that a try.

I dont think there is a plug midway down on mine (It's a TSC store brand- made by King Kutter, I beleive)- but even if there were, I'd be afraid to open it!....I mean, if it squirts out the TOP plug! I think I'll drain it, and grease it!

Thanks

My bush hog did that, It was water. Was the oil a tanish color? You should just drain it and start out with fresh oil.

No....wasn't tan- nice n' clear....doesnt seem like it's contaminated with water. I do intend to change it, though. Now for my next question: What type and weight oil????

(I still cant figure out why it seems pressurized though! That's a weird one!)

I have a theory about the gearbox having pressure in it. It could have to do with temperature changes. When the weather turns cold the contents (oil, water, air, etc.) of the gearbox contract This draws in air, and probably moisture, in past the seals, The seals are designed to keep stuff in but can let stuff pass through the other way. When the weather warms up the contents of the gearbox will expand causing the pressure.
That's my theory. If anyone has a better one I'd like to hear it.
Catch ya' later Frank M.

Yes....because it didnt start spewing until the weather turned hot- that, in conjunction with what Scott said about a plugged vent, and possibly too much oil in there, is probably it!

Thanks Frank and everybody! I think my problem is solved!

There should be a check plug on the side of the gear box. take it out with the mower sitting level, and let the oil drain out till its even with the check plug.

It might have water in it. The oil will float on top of the water. I'd drain it completely and start with fresh gear lube

Drain and refill with 85-140, or fill with good grade gun greese.

That's two for "gun grease" so far. The gun grease has it! That's what I will use! Thanks.

some times you can get bad advice on here by well meaning but un knowledgeable people . i have seen first hand what can happen to gear boxes when the gear oil is replaced with grease . the turning gears will hollow out cavaties in the grease and not be lubricated . if this is such a good idea fill the transmissions on you vehicles and tractors with grease. same thing
