Does anyone know what the horsepower requirement is for the Vermeer 605C? Is a 40 horse tractor (Ford 4000 Industrial) enough power?

We bought a 605c new in 77 ran it until we got out of cattle. Wonderful way to make folding money for college and support my old tractor habit.

We had a really great dealer that made sure we knew about all the updates that were available. The old man said by far the best update was two 3/8" bolts with bushings in the tension chains. These kept the belts loose as you were starting the bale so the hay would be clear across the chamber before it started rolling. Make sure your baler has these.

As to tractor size I used a Case 1070 mostly (cab with a/c) would occasionaly use our JD 3020 when the case was down. As stated before your 40 hp ford might handle it just be careful that the baler doesn't start pushing you down hill's.

BTW write VERMEER for a safety update kit. They will send you some stickers and send you a new Owners Manual free of charge. I think they will also want the serial number.

I baled 30 bales with our 605c baler thursday and pulled it with a 2510 JD . the hay was heavy clover and on a hill, when the baler was near full and pulling up hill it was all i wanted. but on flat ground and ave. hay no problems. I think the 2510 is about 56-57 hp. the hay must be dry or you will wrap your rollers or have a hard time starting a bale. 40 hp is the min. I would think, but if you have problems handling it when it starts to get full just wrap a smaller bale---pappy

the key to a 605c is BIG wind rows. go fast and zig zag at start to fill the full width of baler. and hay has to be dry tuff hay is a real pain. but they are a good baler and easy to work on

40 horsepower is plenty, i used to run my 605c with a MF 231 which is 35 hrspower, never had any problems, only problem i had was getting a roll of hay started with the baler, it did bale good but i got tired of having to stop and unclog the baler every other bale. is this the first round baler u ever had?

Our first round baler was a 605C; great baler under optimum conditions; could be a PIA if you ran something into the feed/press rolls which was too big to go on through. No reverse; have spent hours trying to get it unchoked. Pulled it with a 4020; would think 40 HP might be right at the minimum. Might work on level ground. Neighbor pulled his with 5000 Ford; did alright.
