Do I need a disc harrow?

Just bought a Ford 640 with rotary cutter. I just cut 5 acres of field with 6' tall weeds and grass. I have a box blade (5') and want to level the ground. The box blade has 6 rake teeth, but it seems like I will need something with closer spacing to break up the roots. Do I need to run a disc harrow or other implement to break up the roots and ground? What size should I use? New to tractors and can use any advise. Thanks

Caseys right. Plow it down under with a 2 14 3 14 plow, then disc it good then level it if need be. A disc is a disc and a harrow is a harrow to real farmers. A disc harrow is a sign of a newbie, an you dont want that

Years ago, a disc harrow was a term used to describe a disc, as we know them today. A harrow was a term used to describe an implement used for finishing the field, like a drag- used to be a spike tooth drag, Boss harrow, Coil tine drag, or harrow. Differences in terminology are regional or the result of passage of time.

I agree, that there are different terms at different places, but as for (years ago), I go back to over 50 yrs on the farm, and lived with one grandpa and next to another, one dying in 57, the other in 72, so for here at least (there) NE Kansas, There was never mention of a disc harrow, Now disc plow is another bird. Ive heard of them, even saw them by now, but never saw any till I got here in NE OKLA

Location may have had some bearing on the term disc harrow, but I think the farm equipment manufacturer had the greatest bearing. I don't know what other manufacturers called theirs, but Ford sold what they called a Series "E" Lift Type Tandem Disc Harrow. The one I have was manufactured for Ford by Dearborn Motors Corporation of Birmingham Michigan.

In the forties and fifties If you grew up near a Ford Dearborn Dealer, you called them disc harrows. It didn't matter what brand tractor you had in the barn.
