Hay wagon tires

I have finally got my hay wagons in good shape except that I have some difficulty finding tires (15" and one old 16" wagon) that will reliably hold 100 to 200 square bales at a cost I am comfortable with. Is there a type of used car/truck tire that would be suitable or am I destined to be buying Implement tires that are quite pricey around here?? If so is there a preferred brand? I am currently nursing half loads and am not going to do it that way again next year!! Any & all comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks to all!

The Best tires for haywagons for your money are usually tread worn light truck tires. The extra ply rating really makes them more blowout resistant and they have a lot more capacity than most car tires. Could be hard to find if you're in a farming area. Keep in mind that changing tires on loaded wagons is no fun.

You can look up your local tire dealer and ask him what the load rating is for specific sizes and tires. If you have some 225r14s on your haywagon, those are good for about 1650# each. 235r15s will raise that to about 1980# each. 11L15 implement tires are rated for 25-2650#. TRUCK tires, in a wide 16 or 16.5" size would likely have a decent load rating also. Think about what kind of gvw your 3/4 or ton size pickup trucks have---10,000-12,500# gvws, right? The tires for such a truck would hold up a 5 or 6 ton hayrack also, don't you think?

Most of the 235-85-16E's (10 ply) are rated to carry 3050 pounds ea. at 80 pounds of air. Better have a pretty good rim to take that load and air pressure though! They rate them a little less when used as duals. Robert

On mine I got some used truck tires from the local tire dealer I buy from. I bought some new tires for my truck, they just mounted them on the hay wagon tires - cost me $20 for the mounting. The old truck tires work great. Been 5 years. Irv

I would just find some bald car/light truck tires and put some tubes in them. We have ran them on our hay and gravity wagons for years and only have had problems with them when we ran them so hard we had them down to the cords.... Heck, we have old 15" radials off cars on our one hay wagon....we haul 200 bales with it no problem and if the barn was high we could haul 250 no problem. I think the thinner wall of the car tires helps cushion the wagon when holes, bumps, etc.. are hit. Like I said, they are cheap and effective, if you want a heavier duty tire I hear you can get those old aircraft tires cheap now days, we have 4 on a gravity wagon and they are nice but truck tires that we can't throw away are cheaper.....

I agree on the used tires.with all the SUV's and goverment restrictions on disposing of tires you can get decent used 15"&16" tires for little or no money expecialy if youhave a regular tire place.dad and my grandfather used them even back in the 60's and 70's never any problems on haywagons

Same here, always old car tires on the hayracks. I get about 130-150 bales on mine. Now, maybe would think more about it if I were traveling 20 miles on the highway with them, the guy didn't say his intentions, but for the mile or so on the road, and otherwise around the farm, old car tires work fine here.
