AC #3 Mower on a F-14

I am in the final stages of rebuilding an Allis-Chalmers #3 sickle-bar mower. I plan to use it behind a Farmall F-14.

I bolted the mower up to the drawbar today to see if things would line up. It lines up nice, except that the pto shaft is going to have to be a LOT longer. The original shafts are about 24" each (male and female). Allowing for adequate overlap, that means the center-to-center distance on the u-joints was originally about 30", maybe as much as 36". Center-to-center now is more like 51".

Making the new shaft is not a problem, I have to redo the female part anyway, as it was all goobered up. My question is, with a shaft that long, made of what appears to be 1" ID square tubing, am I going to have a problem with shaft whip? I figured to overlap all but about the last 6" to minimize it as much as possible, but I'm still concerned.

Opinions? Ideas?

Paul, seems like the standard drawbar setting ( I beleive your tractor has a different set-up) is 14" from tip of pto shaft to center of the drawbar pin hole. Be careful that you allow clearance within the profile (assembled pto shaft). If you have any hills or low spots to mow through or up, you'll bottom out the shaft and cause it to buckle. You might allow a little more than 6".

If you read my posts on the Tails board you'll know I have experience, not all good, with PTO shaft lenght's. I would say that if you make it pleanty long to start with, then put it on the tractor and mower, then jack up the back of the mower to get an idea of the amount of travel the slide takes. Most cases the shaft will contract more then it extends, because it is higher then wher the hitch pivots. If you could drop the back of the mower, you would notice the PTO shaft will only slide out so far the start to slide back in, Providing the PTO on the tractor is relatively close to the drawbar, and the drive on the mower isn't a mile in the air. Anyway make some marks and do some cutting, you will arive at the proper length. Like I said on Tails for every different model of tractor somethings will be different so I don't understand how there could be a standard that fits them all.
