I have a 1959 dexta, im thinking of buying an international b47 baler at a future sale, i have been told by some people to forget the concept as the dexta in their opinion is underpowered and will not be able to handle the baler with its 32hp engine under heavy crop conditions. is this so??

My Dad pulled an IH 45 baler with a Farmall C, 19HP. It made hard work of real heavy stuff but he did it for almost ten years until he got an M. This was on a Vermont hill farm, just dropping the bales, no way it would have handled a wagon too. If you are on any kind of steep going the tractor weight and brakes have as much to do with success as does the horsepower. I remember one of our neighbors using a small Ford like yours with an engine driven New Holland 77. Worked OK on the flat, but sure pushed him downhill.

Alot of hay has been and still is being baled with that size of tractor. Here is my 2000 which is about the same as your Dexta. I am not sure about the IH 47. If you plan to bale 20,000 bales a year then I would agree that the Dexta is not the right tractor but if you want to bale a 1000 bales a year for yourself then not having to buy a new tractor may make it feasible.

Thanks Jerry, you've certainly silenced a few critics of mine, i agree with your way of thinking and it does seem feasable as i would only bale at max 6 acres per year, and may i ask, what is the baler you use? it looks a treat behind your 2000!. thanks again for the help and the photo was great!!

Thanks Matty. It is a Ford 530 baler. You will see the occasional discussion here of a Ford baler
