If it's a closed throat baler i don't think you would be happy with it.I have run both kinds and the open throat is the best choice. With the open thraot you dump a bale and go on to the next one, with the closed throat you dump a bale and spend the next ten minutes getting the next one started unless conditions are perfect. But for the price you may can take your time. It's not as bad on an air conditioned tractor that i don't have.Be sure to check the belts to see if ther in any good condition.

Parts are still available and Vermeer makes a good baler. The baler you are looking at must be a 605C or earlier. These don't make near as tight a bale and are not open throat. They will bale hay though and do a good job for you unless you put up quite a bit of hay then I wouldn't want anything older than an F series 605.

There is a letter designation after the number - this shows the model/age of the machine. For $250, you must be looking at a 605A or 605B that's well used? These were not open throat designs, and do not feed cornstalks, or hay, as well. They don't start bales as well. Etc.

But, this is based on what I have read over the years. Like you, I'm looking to buy a round baler as well...

Could someone explain further the open vs. closed throat thing. Rould balers are new to me also and would like to be able to tell the difference.
Thanks.

Closed-throat Vermeer had 2 fixed press rolls just behind pick-up reel. Everything that went into baler had to go between them. When hay conditions were perfect (literally), I've baled 20 bales (5 ft x 6 ft) per hour many a time. I've also spent 2 or 3 hours at a time trying to unchoke the thing when things weren't right. Open throat (not sure when they began, I know "F" series is) does not have press rolls. Will feed most anything pick-up reel will pick up. Used to have a "C" model (closed throat); if you're not looking to bale a lot of hay, you'd probably be pleased with it. I would be a little leary of anything earlier (with flat belt in bottom for roll to turn on.
