I just finished using my King Kutter mower for the first time. It is a 5 ft medium duty mower with a 60 hp gear box. I am using a JD 420S with this mower. I mowed for about 1 hour and it was just field grass. When I got done I went to feel the gear box and it was so hot i could not even keep my hand on it for more than a couple of seconds. Should the gear box be that hot? I have plenty of 90 weight in the box so I am just concerned. This is my first time using a mower of this size.

Thanks for the help. Bill

I'm wondering about "plenty of oil". If it is over full with oil or if the oil is too thick (eg has SAE 90 and supposed to have ATF or something) this can cause it to overheat. Oil cools by reducing friction and heat but also by transfering the heat to the heat sink (gear box casting). Oil that is too thick holds too much heat and too much oil builds up pressure (and heat) when it expands. Learned this lesson the hard way on a disc mower cutterbar.

I was told by the rep that King Kutter recommends SAE 80W90 in their gearboxes. I would contact them if the gearbox is running too hot. Just sounds like something ain't right.
My 2 cents

If it's not blistering the paint, don't worry.

Run it, if it breaks, put a claim in on the warrantee, if you bought it new that is. That is the benefit of buying new with a warranty, to worries if it breaks.

i wonder what would be making it so hot. i have been bushhogging many years with several different brands of cutters and never had or heard of one that got that hot. might be a specific problem on that brand? i can run my bushhog brand for 5+ hours steady in the hot texas sun cutting hay and the gearbox box is warm but not hot.if i had one that got that hot, i would contact the dealer or manfacturer and try to get some answers or maybe another unit. it just does not sound right to be that hot. be safe!
