I saw a bale basket being used while vacationing in Vermont. What is the advantage of the bale basket over the usual baler and thrower/kicker combination.

I just got one this spring. LOVE it for alfalfa. Like it real well for hay. We'll find out about straw in 2 days. :) The only bent bales I get is if I turn too short they bend & don't slide up, and alfalfa that doesn't matter too much, just hay. Of 2000 bales, I got 4 that came out 'round' from getting mashed up on top of the slide chute - not bad, I'd expect a lot more busted bales from a thrower!

I have a good servicable baler. Would have had to buy a different baler for over $2000 with thrower. Would have had to buy a bale wagon for $1200-1600. Found this basket & hitch for $1600. As Tim said, much less stuff to maintain, & cheaper to get.

I have used my arms & 2 bale racks before this. A week ago I put up 1200 bales in 3 days, only had help one afternoon - well, my wife raked - she says that's less stress than driving the baler while I used to stack on the wagon. :)

Since it pulls like a 2-wheel wagon, I find I can back it up to the barn door still hitched to the baler. Otherwise, the biggest pain is trying to unhook it when loaded.

Any more info or pictures, just ask.

Paul. If you are bending and won't go up shoot when you turn your'e wagon needs to be closer. What brand did you get? They are different in chute entrance one brand so much nice than other brand.

Paul, If you make a special shorter hitch pin and use lock key, also always have wagon in straight line, also you should have a slide in the hitch. T o make it real easy to unhook follow 3 things I just mentioned above. Be straight line and release hitch slide to take off pressure and just pull out safety key push out the pin. Reall simple. Did it for 10 seasons

supposed advantages are less HP requirements, and less complicated machinery to maintain, no hydraulics, electrics, belts, etc. Only one I ever saw used around here, behind a JD 337 baler, tended to bend up the bales something awful coming up that chute.

he didn' have wagon set the right distance behind baler. I used 3 of them for 10 years with excellent results. Anyone have questions on these I can tell you the tricks to make them work great

Rick, out of one load of bales how many broken bales did you average when using a basket? I'm handy enough that if I got one it'd be from building one myself. Any special features I should know about from that standpoint?

Me again. If you are going to build one,let me know by e-mail because I could help you in some design tricks I did to the ones I had. The most omportant thing is the gate latch and how it is designed and mounted. The one brand of bale basket it would catch bales on its gate latch when you unloaded. I made cover solved that. The other brand had no problem. That brand also had chute extension. Straw remove, hay install it. Most important item is when pulling wagon behind baler is make sure you are as close as possible. I mean close! These do work very nice if set right!!!

Zero. If you set them right, and learn couple tricks, you will have none. We were average 10- 15 loads daily. No bales broke
