I came through north Arkansas on a trip and saw some round hay bales that had just been baled, and they were wrapped in clear plastic.I live in Louisiana and have never seen any here. Was wondering if this is an add on to the baler or a special baler. I bale with a 605G vermeer. Can this be put on it Or is it expensive compared to string.Any info is appreciated. The bales were not wrapped on the ends, just around them.

I wrap bales with my J D baler model#535. It is an extra attachment that came with the baler, can use string or the net wrap by adjusting a little hydraulic valve , the baler wraps the net wrap in about a tenth of the time that it takes to put string on them, about one and a half rounds of wrap per bale. I see vermeer balers with a similar set up but I never ran a vermeer. Cost me 240.00 for a role of wrap and wrap maybe 150 bales, depends on the size of the bales. It really saves a lot of hay and not all that bad hay around the outside from Illinois winters and rain.

Thanks for the info, i'm going to check and see if it can be put on my baler. At the cost you gave me it would be about 1.60 per bale. It seems to me it would be worth it due to what you would save on lost hay, not to mention how much faster it would be, my baler is a single feed twine tube and it seems in good hay you spend most of your time tying it up.Thanks again, ken.

There are several different kinds of wrapping.

Each bale can be turned into a small 'silo' - they are wrapped individually after baling by a special machine, basically a very large Saran-wrapper. These are totally wrapped, air-tight, ends & all.

There are bale sleeves that are slipped over the bales to protect them, I'm not sure how those are applied, solid plastic but the ends are open, not very tight.

Instead of twine, 'netwrap' is used by some newer balers, it is a fine mesh of plastic. It offers more weather protection & a tighter bale than twine. I'm not sure if your baler has this option, it should mention it in the owners manual if it can.

In St. Helena Parish there is a lot of bale wraping going on. I see long rows of continously wraped round bales of hay. I have no idea how this is done.

The long rows are a modification of the single bale "shrink wrapping". The advantage is it cuts down on plastic used (as the ends aren't wrapped). Wrappers are pricey but make good rental units. Our local Farm Bureau just bought an inline (Tube-Line Brand) for about $14,000 and rents out for $2.00 per bale plus plastic. Almost every county here (KY) has at least 1 or 2 through FB or NRCS. Makes great silage at a modesst cost ($2.00 for themachine and about $3.00 for the plastic) At $5.00 per bale just saving the weather damage makes it even, not counting the better feed value and reduced risk of rain damage during curing.
