I am looking to purchase a 6' rotary cutter. Since they are about the same price, would I be better off with a Howse or a King Kutter? And why? ----- FYI, I'm buying it for a Ford model 1920 (28.5 hp PTO)---- and my other question is what will a higher hp rotary cutter do for me? For instance... 50hp vrs 75hp which are two options Howse offers.

I thank everyone for their advice and based on your feedback..... Today I will be purchasing a 5' John Deere model 513. Although it is a discontinued model (replaced by the LX5), it is brand new from the dealer and only $850 verses $1,265 for the LX5. It does have a slip clutch & chain guards. Since I am only cutting 20 acres of tall grass once a month, I am sure this will serve me well.

Stay away from Howse brand cutters. I had one for a time and was not happy with it. They are junk. Mine was not balanced well and "odd" vibrations at certain PTO speeds. I traded it off. I have two brush hogs. I have an 8 foot Bush Hog 3008 pull type that I use to cover large pastures, and I have a John Deere 613 three point type that I use to get into tricky areas. I've used the JD 613 to take down some pretty rank growth even though it's rated as a light duty cutter. It's served me well. Both of my units have safety chains. Don't buy a cutter without safety chains. Both units have slip clutchs. Don't be afraid of slip clutchs. They just require a little routine maintenance. Occasionally I loosen the clutch and slip it so that everything continues to work as intended. The owners manuals tell exactly how to do it. It's not rocket science.

Forget both and get something will last. I would recommend spending a little more and get a woods BB72. You should be able to buy one for about $1150.

Hi John,
I have been told to stay away from Howse brand mowers. I have looked at them but have bought a 5' King Kutter for my 135 Massey(36hp.) and if your tractor is only 28.5 hp I really wouldn't go with anything larger than a 5' cut. One thing I like about the King Kutter over the Howse is the bracing and build of the mower, looks lots stoughter than Howse and the King Kutter has access holes in the top of the deck to get too the Blade bolts that the Howse mower I looked at did not have. Little things but also important things as well. I'm real pleased with the K. Kutter and really would recommend them over the Howse. There are a lot of Howse mowers out there too though. Just my opinion.
