Hey guys! Great post. Found lots of good info. Need some help. I always told myself that I would never buy a bush hog with car tires (4 ply). But guess what, I ate those words. Flat tires are everywhere. I have a batwing bush hog. Should I put foam in the tires? Should I purchase perforated wheels? Or should I purchase aircraft tires? I know nothing about aircraft tires. I know that foam is cheaper but I have no price range to go by for the others. Any info would be a great help. The cattle is being stabbed in the eye as we speak.
Thanks,
Ugly Jim

My personal choice is the solid laminated rubber tires, if I'm buying new I insist on them. I've got a little 8' Sidewinder (ancient machine but practically indestructable; use it to mow a "rock pile" that my dad calls a farm) and am too tight to spring for $200.00 each for the soilds on it. Put a set of 14" aircraft tires on (bought wheels, tubes, the works) for just under $200.00. Two years so far and no flats. His farm is covered in hawethorn and even a tire with tire sealer only made it about a week, without usually flat the next day.

I have a real problem with tractor fronts in places with hawethorn. Rears aren't a problem, thorns aren't that long. I've got aircraft tires on the front of one tractor (devil of a time keeping lugs tight, tires don't "roll" on turns. The other tractor we use to mow pastures with has 11L 16's on it, "thorn guard" liner between tube and tire. Good to about 60% tread and then I get push-thru. The thorn bushes are only in the pastures and only on one farm. Other tractors just have regular fronts.

Hi Jim, and I'm sure you're not ugly..I used to have trouble with wagons picking up thorns in the tires along a fence row. I bought a liquid tire sealer and put a bottle in each tire...$5.99 a bottle and I haven't had a flat on that wagon in 7 years...may be what you need...then I have solid rubber tires on my rotary brush mower..good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario
