I officially hate my swather!

The belt drive system, particlarily pertaining to steering and lack of downhill control, is the most aggravating mechanical system I've had to use. What in tarnation was the fool that decided to use this system thinking? Works fine on BIG FLAT properties, if you never want to turn a 90 degree corner. If I bring the left lever to reverse for a swing around on anything but very smooth ground, the tailwheel comes off the ground even with the big ole' concrete ballast. Sure, if I took lots of time and slowed the throttle way down it'd work. But I'm trying to get something done not the grass blades as they go down. Sure seems a two hydraulic motor drive or something would be SOOOOO much better. I head downhill and the dang thing runs away, and I really mean it. The steering goes away when it freewheels forward. FUN. Eegads. I could go on. How about the right reverse hardly does anything till it GRABS. Engine runs great though. whoopee. Someone tell me something good to cheer me up. I'm hating not having the money for a good tractor and a disc mower.

BOY DO I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU i spent many hours on a 650 from the early 60s (i think ) that whole drive is a joke other than the drive it wasnt a bad machine I think that a couple of hydrulic motors would fix it right up good luck mike

What brand & model do you have?

Sounds like one of the clutches could stand a rebuild.

I bet I have the oldest self-propelled swather in use.

The downhill stuff has more to do with the clutches, not the belt. Some skid steer loaders used this system as well. Try to get any torque & control out of that...

It's an old Case 655, haven't found a date of manuf. yet. I don't think this thing has any clutches, just variable ratio pulleys for the belts. An in and out swinging pulley system for engage/disengage. I could be wrong. Now I know why the thing didn't sell for much. Noone wants the dang thing.

My HotLine books says they were made in 1972.

So, how does it do reverse with a belt drive tranny?

No trans. It's a loose looped belt that has forward and reverse driven pulleys. Moving the lever brings an idler against the belt, towards the respective driven pulley with an overcenter type linkage so you don't have to hold the levers in forward. No overcenter in reverse. Does that description make sense?

Yup. I see the difficulties. Bet you spend a lot of time equalizing the airpressure on the tires to get it to roll straight, huh? :)

Heck no, I like my right arm sore after using that thing. It pulls left now but because I tried adjusting the tensions on the belts and got it wrong. It also has trim steering on the right steer lever. That linkage moves one half of the right and left steer pulleys, changing ratios a bit for the trim. Of course with me adjusting the tension wrong I have to constantly hold left. Almost done with the last field and then I'll go through it a bit and see if I can improve things.

On my old Owattana swather you add or remove air from the tires to make the tire diameter the right size to get a (relativly) straight line. Of course, my buggest field has a long gentle curve in it to follow a road....
