I have a new JD 790 (30 hp 4WD), and I'm looking for a small set of discs for it. The thing that I don't know, however, is whether or not this tractor will effectively pull them. Short of actually trying them, is there a way to determine if I'm looking for an implement that my tractor simply wasn't made for?

I'm prepared to weight the front and take my time, and I only want to disc 2.5 acres, but, in the future, I may want to use the discs for food plots, etc. Help!

i have a JD 870 (28 hp) 2 wd and have no problem using a 5 ft. disc with it. your tractor should be able to handle it easily.

Chris,
I have a friend that has a JD 790 4 wheel drive. He uses a 5 foot gang disc with his. I have a JD 5105 and we were talking a while back and he told me the 5 foot disc was a pretty good load for the 790. His comment was he didn't think he could pull it if it wasn't 4 wheel drive. I have a 7 foot disc I use with the 5105 and it does pretty good with it. The one thing the 5105 has on the 790 is weight though.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is a "gang disc", as opposed to like a standard 16 blade disc. Thanks so much for the info.
