I just purchased a Ford 841 tractor and a bush hog type mower. I used it for the first time yesterday with the following problem. Twice I had to stop the tractor and mower quickly by pushing in the clutch and braking. Each time the mower blades became wedged into each other. The only way to free them is to crawl underneath it and pry the blades back apart. I know the blades are supposed to swivel but is it possible that they are mounted too tight? I also think this has something to do with how I stopped the tractor/mower. This tractor does not have live PTO so would an over-running clutch help? Thanks guys

Well, I just learned something. I have been bush hogging for years and have just gotten use to standing on the brakes to get stopped. Sounds like this is a type of coupler that goes on the bushhog drive shaft. Right? If so some place like Tractor supply or CO-OP might have them...might be worth checking into.
Thanks!!
DR

Thanks Pete and Mike for the advise. I noticed that the mower pushed the tractor once the clutch was in. I will go and pick up an over-running clutch. Thanks again guys. I have learned a lot on this web site. Scott

No problem Scott. I had to learn that one also. Years ago, my great uncle bought a Ford tractor and bush hog. I was a little guy back then. Anyway, he got it home and was mowing. Pushed in the clutch to stop and the thing kept going. Luckily, there was enough room to stop before hitting something. I remember it scared him so bad that it stuck with me ever since then.
Be safe.

Scott,
Yes. Get an over running coupler! The momentum of the bush hog is alot of force to wind down quickly. A overrunning coupler will let it wind down on it's on without turning the PTO.

Blades are not mounted too tight. An over ride
clutch would most likely solve this problem.
Also, if mower has been setting a long time
without use, spray some WD40 where bolts hold
blade on. An over ride clutch is a lot cheaper
than a new radiator when you run your tractor into
a corner post or your wife's SUV.
