I purchased an Army cargo trailer at an auction last week. One friend tells me it's not legal on the highway, another tells it is. Who is correct?

Thanks,
TomH

Thanks for the information guys. It sounds, as to what I need to do is take some pictures over to the DOT and then make repairs and upgrades the deem necessary to make it legal. License it and then have the DOT check repairs and upgrades. Last but not least get a written report.

Thanks,
TomH

Could it be that the type of brakes are no longer legal in your state or that it has no brakes and would be over the weight limit for without brakes? In applying for licence they would not ask, if you were stoped only then would you find out.

If the hitch is sound, and it has the proper state mandated lights, and the state will give you a trailer plate, Use it. john

In some states you may not need plates if it for agricultural use. Check your states' DOT. In KY the state DOT has been very helpful when I have called with questions (less so when they have me pulled over on the side of the road). I always wirte down date and time of call and the officer I spoke with, just in case.

I think the full answer is: "it depends."

Most trailers the Army has bought in the last ten years or so are either commercial or commercial-modifications, and these would be street legal *if* they're in good condition (meet safety standards). The older trailers may not be, especially if in poor shape.

I suspect Mike's answer below is a very good test: if your state will issue plates for it, then it is ok...all they can say is "no"!

wish I'd see one at auction, I've been looking here for a year or so because it would make a great utility hauler. Good luck.

Seems to me is the state will give you a liscense plate for it, then it would be legal. I'm just guessing.
