Just a quick note to warn others not to make the same mistake twice. I have a small brook running through the center of my property. I have always had crystal clear water all summer down stream for the animals Every year the grass and brush would grow around the brook upstream and make it hard to enjoy seeing the fish, ect while walking. Well, I bought a sicklebar and figured finally I can keep it mowed and groomed. I have such a major algae problem now that I let the sunlight get to the water it's unbelievable. With the extra light as well as the increased water temperature, the brook is all messed up. I'm carting water from the house out to the animals now every morning. Beware and think before you mow! Neater isn't always better!

Why are u carting water, the livestock will still drink the water, i have a 3 acre lake, its spring fed (course with the drought its not spring fed anymore) and i have no trees or tall grass, the cattle still drink out of it, the waters not goin to hurt the cattle. If u dont like the idea of cattle drinking the water TSC as some chemicals that u can dump into the pond or upstream and it kills the algae and cleans it up, u might wont to check into that, but i was u i wouldnt worry about it.

Sorry I wasn't specific enough, I'm carting water to the rabbits and chickens. The algae clogs the waterers I use. The goats seem to be doing OK with the algae. Not the same can be said about the fish though. I have been trout fishing in area streams now for the past few years bringing them home alive and putting them in the brook. They seemed to be doing well until this problem. I've had a fish kill also for the first time ever. I hate to add chemicals if I don't have to. You know how that works, what is safe today and has been for 50 years, suddenly isn't tomorrow, then comes a big fine from the state for releasing something into the water that effects the downstream property. I'm doing OK with hauling the water, I just wanted to post a note so someone else trying to do good didn't do the same thing. Thank you for your response though. Good luck!

Why buy chemicals? Just find a few bales of barley straw and throw them in the water. Believe it or not, it will kill the algae and not hurt anything else.
