personally i would stay away from any hesston rounder...we had 2 5510's at the same time(grandpa bought both of em used) we used it to put up fescue hay...what a joke. we were either replacing bearings or belts or hoses.it had to be DRY to start a bale any bit of moisture would wrap it around the roller and youd spend all day digging it out. We bought a new Vermeer 3 years ago and have put up close to 3000 bales with out a problem. I have a friend that bought one of the last 5510's made, his is like a 92 i think, well any way the guy they bought it off of used it one year and parked it in the barn, he had it parked just right so it could see that 435 jd baler working, not sitting:). He bought it this spring and has had to replace all the belts on it, 2 bearings and a drive yoke. He has also found he has to carry and extenguisher with him or else the baler will burn, if not careful the twine will wrap around the bottom drum roller and catch on fire. A 5400 is an older baler, if i was you i would look for a Vermeer 504/604 d or newer and a jd 410/510 and newer. I think the 410/510 is an open throat but dont hold me to it. A Vermeer x04 C or older is a closed throat which the hesston is to and its a real b*tch to start a bale in. Hope I was of some help. btw what size of tractor are you gonna be useing to pull the baler?

I got a 5545 and have not been satisfied with it from the beginning. I bale coastal bermuda, so it may work better baling a larger stemmed grass. It just doesn't do a good a job as my old JD 430. Grass gets between the belt and the side of the baler and runs the belt into the dividers and will tear up the belt if you let it, you gotta get off the tractor every other bale and dig it out somewhere. A new set of belts can be had for about $700 or so, but I don't that would even cure it. I paid $3500 for mine and was a low hour machine, used very little, now I know why. In my opinion Hesston makes some good balers just not rounds. Stay away from it. Get a JD or Vermeer.

Hesston is supposed to be a good baler. Be sure to check the belts. Those guys are pretty expensive to replace. I'm sure some of the other guys who are more experienced with rounders will have more comments for you.
Take care.

I bought a vermeer used and it beat me to death last year, new p/u teeth, new belts, and the set screws in the wind guards left permanent grooves in the back of my head from lying under it digging plugs out. I would want to see ANY used baler work before I took it home. I traded mine for a new New Idea that had set on the dealer's lot for an extra year.
