I am planning to purchase a used round baler before the end of the year. Want to stick with JD or NH, due to dealer and parts availability in my area. Want to spend $5,000 or less. What are models to look for, and models to avoid? What should I look at mechanically besides the typically dents and bangs. Belts, chains, pickup cam? What else? Are the beltless chain balers any good, I know NH made them for a few years. What are your opinions. Thanks.

I work for a custom baler. Last season I baled with a NH chain baler. Was down alot and this year he put me with a Deere 566 belt type. I have personnaly laid close to a thousand on the ground, too dry to get a second cutting in our area. I know he paid alot more than 5000, but our customers ask for and pay more for Deere net wrapped 1500lbs bales.

have run 530..535 and now on 566..the 530 would be a baler that would make you a good bale..it has hyd tension and a large spring for tension also..you can loose the hyd and still make a good bale...look at belts..run hand over rollers and see how much wear down they have ..where belts run they wear more..look at inside of baler walls to see how much wall is left..how thin..check drive line..chains and sprocketts..check pickup reel..see if they have much wear, the bars the teeth run on..you have cam that turns the teeth, you can just wiggle the teeth and see how much movement they have..you can go on and on..just check it good..530 is a good baler for a person that is not in a hurry...single string arm.. probably bale about 20 per hour depends on hay ..have nice day may god bless

Hey cannon you seem to be really good with these things, are the gehl round balers ok?My neighbors friend has one they used it on about 11 acres.baled about 20 bales.cant remember what size it was 16 or 1800 and somethin.also was wonderin if round balers bale bales tight.i heard the slower you go the more compact and stay together better.also wondered if its bad to keep em uncovered but im pretty sure it is bad.lol
thanks.

Is that the soft-core, big roller type? Do they form bales easily? Do they handle wetter hay, or cornstalks well?

As to the NH 800 chain & bar balers, my understanding is they work fine, the chain & bar are spendy to replace, they actually bale wet or cornstalk bales better than older belt balers (see thread below on JD 410 baler). But, they do beat off alfalfa leaves a bit more than belts, and don't produce as tight a bale as the newer belt balers - affects outdoor storage quality. Note: Never used one, I'm looking also just like you, if you happen to find 2 can you let me have one? :)

Paul yes it is the soft core. the baler chamber is closed so far they seem as if they are going to weather well. This is my first year but have seen a lot of them that seem to weather well. some say they unroll ok to feed others say they do not. It is easy to start a bale and I like the double electrec tie system. I am sure that as with any system they will have drawbacks and work well with others. Sid
