Do implement dealers haggle?

I've bought some implements at auctions, but I've never bought anything from a dealer.

I'm considering the purchase of a brush cutter (Woods or Bushhog). Say I'm quoted a list price of $1500. Is the dealer likely to accept less than list price? How much less?

I realize this will vary from dealer to dealer, so I'm just looking for some general advice.

Always ask the dealer to list his price out from his book. then take the freight and any setup/shop charges and set them to the side. Then take the list price times 23% and add the freight and setup/shop charges back in and you will have a good idea wot the dealer has in the equipment.

I even got $150 knocked off a new freezer at Montgomery Ward a few years ago! I just threw out the offer as a joke, and the guy took me up on it.

I would try to haggle a bit. I figure it like this, they won't sell it to you if they were going to loose money on it.

As for working on a lower price, a few years back I was at a mall looking for a pair of running shoes. I was in one shoe store chain grumbling under my breath about the prices. I guess the mananger overheard me and ask me what I thought they should go for. I fired off a price $15 below what they were listed for. To my suprise the mananger said sold!

Not just on equipmet but even at the local feed and seed co-op. A couple of years ago I asked to manager to sharpen his pencil a little and he knocked $25.00 per ton off fertilizer. I used to shop at 4 local places and do about 25% of my business at each. Now I've pretty much gone with the guy who sharpens his pencil and I'm set up in his computer for a flat 10% off everything and 25%on animal health, feed, and fertilizer.

Try throwing him a price about ten percent under, especially big ticket items. (They might allow even more). That allows some 'wiggle room'. If he doesn't barf or throw you out of the shop, you know you're in the ballpark and can continue negotiating. Also come prepared with knowledge of advertised prices of other dealers. Some normally are known for high starting prices. Check with neighbors to see how much various dealers 'knocked off' of their advertised prices. Experience shows what margins various dealers work on. They are not all the same. Not different than used cars.

Yes! You don't go in and pay list price for a major piece of equipment. If you are trading you usally need to ask for a trade price for more than one dealer. Some times the Companies have some incentives that can be used.

I think you should go ahead and try. It isn't like your are trying to do something a lot of other people do. I have even got the guy at tractor supply to give me a break on some high ticket items. I went with a friend & he bought a 3pt disc. I asked what kind of deal he could give him and the manager immediately knocked $50 off. So there is some discretion built in. Although in this instance, the $50 was something we took right away, I doubt that any further conversation would yeild any more and might cause hard feelings. But I have gotten 5 0r 0 -20 off on other things there. I guess I am a good customer. My 2c Irv

Sounds like you're concerned about embarrassing yourself by trying to negotiate in an arena that maybe doesn't typically allow for negotiation.

I say, who cares? Go ahead and make yourself look silly! He who never asks, never gets. Make him an offer. The worst thing that can happen is he says no.

Just generally, I'd say that anything costing that much usually has negotiation room built into the price. I mean, we're talking about businessmen who are used to dealing with farmers. Other than farming, there's nothing a farmer does better than haggle! You should have seen my grandfather when he went to Tijuana. Man those vendors never knew what hit them!

I don't have to haggel I have worked for and live by our local implement dealer so I generally get the top knock off & the good neighbor discount also. So he says who knows but him. One thing to think about is parts availablity & whether they will be there when you need them our local dealer is always there. Just my 2 cents. Snowball
