I am planting a food plot and I had a soil test done. I had a bulldozer come in and clear some timber out for me and the soil in very acidic. I needed 3 ton of lime per acre and its a 1 1/2 acre plot. I tried to spread this with my broadcaster on my 8n but it would plug it up. I dont think a truck can get back to where the plot is. How do you guys normally do this? Is there a different implement I need?
Thanks Mark

They sell lime in pellets also, this sure beats the heck out of applying the powdered lime, look at your local fertilizer dealer and ask about the pellet lime, easier to spread then powdered.

the pellitized lime is generally dolomite, which is high in magnensium. if you soil is high in mag you'll only sompund dthe problem and you soil will get harder, more like concrete.

I buy my lime from my farmers CO-OP, and they will load it in your container/truck or ??. They will also deliver it, or i can rent their spreader, and that's what i do. They load the spreader, i pull it home with my pu, then i pull it with my tractor to spread the lime. I like their PTO powered spreaders, and there's a chart on them to tell you how to set them for what ever pounds per acre you want. These spreaders really work well, and spread about 40' wide!! The lime cost, with the use of their spreader about $16.00 per ton. They will load any amount of lime i want in the spreader up to about 10 or 11,000 pounds, so with a lighter load you shouldn't have any problems pulling it with a smaller tractor. Robert

I apply my lime with a drop spreader the kind that has the rotating bar in the bottom. Mine is on a garden tractor and it is a 4' wide tow behind. I am sure there are larger versions.

You are applying the granulated ag type?

Is your spreader equiped with the rotating agitator to bust up the lumps?

At approx 300lbs per trip with a small seed/fert spreader, thats going to be close to 30 loads, time wise, if anyway possible, let your dealer spread it with a truck, or get them to loan you one of their smaller (1 - 2 ton) trailers that you can pull with your tractor.
