I'm not talking about horse power, I'm asking about weight.

How heavy does a tractor need to be to maintain traction in black dirt for a 3-14 3pt plow?

Will a 2020 JD do it? How about a MF 165 or IH 574?

All three of those tractors should do a good job with a three bottom plow. The 574 is probably heavier and has more power than either of the other two you mention, but none of them should have any trouble with a 3 bottom plow.

Either the JD 2020 or the MF 165 are heavy enough and have enough hp to pull three bottoms. Can't say on the IH as I'm not familiar with that beast.

My grandfather pulled a JD 416 3-14" 3-point plow through our heavy clay with an MF65 gas, 4800 lbs. (without front or rear weights, only water ballast). I don't know much about the IH utility tractors, but the 165 and the 2020 are similar in weight to our 65.

Do you know if a JD 416 has a solid rubber wheel in back? I just got a JD category I 3-14 with rubber trail wheel. Can't find anything stamped in the frame to identify it.

Ours doesn't have a rubber wheel, only a steel one. I know somebody who has two 813 3-points, one that has a rubber wheel in the back, and one without. Probably an option? Does your plow have safety-trip beams?

Yes, I'm pretty sure I have safety trip beams, but I really don't know how they work. Chances are I'll never trip one, but if I do does it just snap back in, or do I have to replace a shear pin.

Is the 813 newer than the 416?

Safety trip bottoms use a spring and cam roller combo. If you trip one, just back up the plow with the tripped point stuck in the ground and it will roll back under and lock under the spring. The 813 is older than the 416. The 416 was designed for the smaller JD utilities, as well as any tractor using Cat. I 3-pt with draft control. The 813 was designed for the 2-cylinder tractors that had 3-pt but did not have draft control, hence it had a steel gauge wheel mounted up front to help control depth.
