The MF balers have the same knotters that IH put on theirs I beleive that they call it a 5 phase knot looks like a NH knot with a loop in it They do not have a wiper arm,the bale pulls the knot off the bill hook as the bill hook is angled back some, they were not very good knotters. Last year I went to the field on a IH 47 and it was tying a good knot but would not come off the billhook and what the problem was,he did not have the twine routed right and the guide that had the spring on it was not working right It had too much tension on the twine before it got to the knotter. I can't explain it but all I know is that it went to work and I told the man not to call me again unless He bought a New Holland. I hope that this can be of some help.

Funny thing is, my neighbor has a IH 47 that he's used for about 30 years and it works great. I had to borrow it to do my first crop in June. If my "fix" doesn't hold on the Massey I may have to borrow it again.

Jim,

Sorry we had you worried there. memories aren't always accurate. dont know when massey changed their knotters. The one I ran for the neighbor must have predated the 124. it was probably a 1969 or 70.

by the way, lots of people disdain the ih balers but properly maintained, they are a reliable knotter. pull up the archives on ih balers and there are some good discussions on them. they have baled lots of hay over the years.
