This may sound like a stupid question but someone asked me if my hay was "fescue free or at least endophyte free". What exactly does this mean, I know fescue is a type of grass but what type is it? I have two types of hay I baled this year, one is timothy grass and the other is an orchard grass/clover mix. Thanks.

Fungus! yes, that's right. Bacteria is in root nodules of nitrogen-fixers. I'll remember it correctly one of these days . . . .

Fescues have a symbiotic bacteria in their stems that some animals, especially horses, can not tolerate. There are now endophyte-free varieties out there, but horsey people tend to stay away from all fescue. If you didn't bale any fescue, then you don't have endophytes.
