Can you make a 3 bottom plow out of an IH 4 bottom and have it still work well? Any info would be appreciated.

I am thinking about doing this with an old Cockshutt 3 bottom disk trip lift plow it almost seems like it is modular the way it was built . The neighbor said it was all the super M could do to pull it as a 3 bottom but he said nothing could get the roots of briars up to the surface after bush hogging them like the disk plow did . I figure it would be a good workout for the Ca this spring if the Mrs. will let me get her finished up and out in the field again. Somehow she always seems to always find another use for the tractor fund. T.J.

Did it with a JD plow.

It seems to work better, pull better, etc. without the last bottom than it did with it.

John, some #16 plows were made to delete a bottom or ADD a bottom. Not ALL 16's are this way. If you have a #16, look where the "land" wheel is on the left side as you stand behind the plow. IF the wheel is outside a STRAIGHT frame, you can't, but if the left wheel is tucked in front of the fourth bottom and the frame for the fourth bottom looks "added on" then yes you can take that bottom off and move the tail wheel up behind the third bottom. The "spine" of the plow will stick out quite a bit, or it may be cut off if you NEVER want to make it back into a 4 bottom. You will also need to adjust your hitch to get it to pull straight. Good luck. Jim T
