I have a trip plow.

The plow has a tendency to trip too readily like as in with just hard ground. It's always and only the front plow.

In looking at the trip mechanism, it looks like the notch is rounded off a little on the corners. Could I remedy this by dressing up the notches a little. I would really like it to trip with a rock etc but I spend too much time resetting it right now.

Could a good old fashioned cleaning and greasing of the mechanism be the solution. There is some rust and corrosion there but not all that bad.

Anybody had similar experince with these?

I wouldn't grease the trip mechanism. Made that mistake once and couldn't get it to stay in at all that way.

I never used a Deere plow with the trip bottoms, but we had the same problem with our IH 540 4-12's....The front bottom tripped about ever 5ft in our soils, and this got very old. We just put a bolt in the trip mech. so it can trip. We run 1st and 2nd gear so we don't go fast enough to break anything.

You can adjust the tripping resistance by adding tubular shims. Each shim added will increase the tripping load by 600 pounds.

To work properly, the larger shims must be assembled over the smaller shims.

Also if it trips too easily, it could be.

Slot in standard rounded.
Throw-out roller damaged.
Excessive wear on pivot stud.
Coil spring broken
Dirt packed under throw-out roller.
Plow running on nose.

Thanks for the information. I'm sure there is a little rounding on the slot on that one plow. This gives me some things to work with.
