I noticed the response to and earlier post regarding the 241 baler, and it was all negative. Why? Can anyone fully explain the details concerning this baler?

What round balers from between 1977-87 are worth looking at (because they do a good job) and which ones are as they say, something to run from?

Any Idea where I can get a Service / Parts Manual for this baler?

Thanks

Neil

I just bought a used 241 two weeks and tried it the first time 2 days ago. I was kinda dreading it after reading the negative comments about the 241.

I found the bale easy to start and easy to keep balanced in size. The twine cutter worked perfect the first time, but snagged on the next 4 or 5 bales. I think it takes practice and a new knife (which I intend to replace).

I think this model wasn't designed for rapid baling like the newer models. A lot has improved in 20-25 years of engineering. It seems to suit my limited needs...I'll probably bale less than 150 large bales in a summer.

Can't comment on bearings and the fire hazard. I intend to put a fire extinguisher on the baler and check the bearings frequently.

241 had many narrow belts, probably exposed bearings- which tend to burn up the baler if they burn out. Closed throat balers do not bale cornstalks easily. My NI456 is an open throat, but still poor on stalks. Bearings are protected from hay, but still had a minor fire once. Does a good job on hay, might handle stalks if deep-textured belts are used. Once the stalk bale starts rolling, it does fine. Later versions had a door latch, so tractor hydraulics did not have to hold door shut- hard on tr hyd.

I just picked up a 605F Vermeer for under $2000, made 20 bales so far, seems pretty good. Having a bit of an issue with the tying arm, but think I just need to adjust the pressure releif shims & get the twine knife sharp & adjusted.

I think the very early round balers had a 'closed throat' which was really awful for plugging. The 'open throat' models are much better. In the Vermeer line, I believe after the 'C' model was open throat.
