We have a McCormick-Deering, horse drawn sickle bar mower #6. Does anyone have any idea how old this is or any other general information about it? I would appreciate the follow up. Thanks!

My sources list the No. 6 from 1919-1931. It was replaced by the 7 and 9 models which have oil bath gear boxes instead of open gears and were made until 1951. I have both a 6 and a 9 High Gear and find the 9 much superior because of its greater weight (more traction), wider wheels and quieter operation. The high gearing also helps greatly. If you look on the underside of the gear box you should find the year of manufacture cast into the metal.

I was told that if you look on the underside of the gearbox they have the year of manufacture, but I myself never followed up on this to see if it is true.
