I have been offered a Ford 505 belt driven sickle bar mower over the net. I have also been told over the net(by another party) that there is no such implement and that perhaps it is a misidentified Ford 515. The seller says it is belt driven and does not have a pitman arm and that it will cut with the sickle raised up at a 90 degree angle. Sounds like what I need... B U T what is it? Is there a Ford 505?

Thanks for any help,

Patrick

Ford 505 and 515 are different mowers, but they do both exist. 505 = long pitman, 515 = pulley w/short pitman. Sounds like you're looking at a 515.

The 505 can't cut much above or below horizontal because the pitman can only push the cutting knife back & forth while it's fairly flat. The 515 drives the knife from a pulley that's in line with the main pivot point on the bar; meaning that it can push the knife back and forth at any angle you can set the bar to, even straight up.

The tractor's hydraulic lift pulls on linkage that helps raise the bar up a few feet to clear obstacles during operation. When you're done working, you can push the bar all the way up and hold it in place with a special hooked rod.

Unfortunately, most of the mowers I've seen don't have all the parts anymore, they're out of adjustment, broken/poorly repaired, etc., so they seldom work the way they were intended to. They're usually stored outside too, so they rust up, exaserbating all other problems. Find out when this one was last used. Beware of "...its was runnin' good when last used...", that could have been during the Eisenhower administration.

The 505 does NOT have a pittman! It is a IH
1300 belt driven mower, that Ford contracted
to IH to build for them after they quit building
the 515. You are thinking of a Ford 501. The 505 is raised up and down with the 3 point hitch.

CASEIH 1600. They are good mowers.

Thanks for the info. How are these things raised and lowered in use?
