I'm working on this Oliver model #62 Roto-fill square baler. The sliding box inside the baler was frozen; so I disconnected the chain that drives the forks which pull hay into the box from the header, in order to free-up the box. With a little elbow grease and a portable hydraulic ram the box is free now. However, when I tried to reconnect the above mentioned chain to reunite the moving parts together, the forks slam into the box. -It's out of time. I have tried for six long hours to time it and I'm worse off now than when I started. The only markings on the gears are "5" and "0" on the small sprocket. "1" and what I think is a timing "dot" or mark on the large gear. I've tried numerous combinations and nothing works. Any help out there?

Jacob,I have never timed an oliver baler but I have timed many JD's.It would help you if you had a manual!!!I will try.Turn flywheel in direction pto turns and bring plungerhead(slding box)nearly to opening of where fingers bring in hay.At this point fingers should have already pulled in hay and be leaving balechamber for more hay.On JD's and NH's one chain off or broken usually has effect on other chain timing and functions.Turn by hand after assembly.Jim B

Above all - don"t hook it to the tractor until you have taken it thru the whole baling cycle by hand or all #@$% could break loose.

I've placed the forks in numerous positions in relation to the box position and everything goes okay until I turn the baler over 30 rounds or so. After this, everything starts to hit again. It's very, very aggrivating.

Something's changing timing. Check to see that all keys, slip clutches, and shear pins in all shaftsare intact.

Is it possible for a loose chain to cause timing problems? The main drive chain which is directly connected to the front main clutch was very loose. The chain didn't slip a link, however.

a streched chain could throw it out of time over cycles
