I am a starting farmer and am getting ready to plant some winter wheat in s.e. PA. I am curious as to what the diferences are between bearded and nonbearded. Last year I combined some for a neighbor and thought that the bearded was harder to thresh. It also yielded a lot less but it was on poorer ground. Any thoughts on what would be better to grow and why? Thanks a lot.

JP,most bearded wheat is hard, beardless wheat is soft.I plant beardless because I graze it out and the awns can stick in livestocks throats. If selling for grain where I live there is a price difference in hard and soft wheat.Jim B

The only reason I plant bearded wheat is because the deer don't like the awns (whiskers), so they don't nip the heads off. Beardless wheat they will destroy.
