I just found out that my grandpa bought an original sickle bar mower for his tractor. I do not know if he bought it brand new with the tractor in 1948 or not. Well when I heard that I went over to the farm and went looking for it along the feild in the brush. Well I FOUND IT!!!!
I was very happy. My dad and I have restored the tractor and now we want to fix up the sickle bar mower. It is the one where you un-bolt the draw bar and bolt up the mower. I assume it is a IH implement but have not pulled it out of the weeds yet. Does anyone have any information on the mower so I can tell if I have all the parts or if I have to search high in low in the barn for parts.
what color would it have been and does anyone know if they make decals for it??? any help would be great.
Thanks
Chad Penny

Those mowers worked well but they weren't very popular unless you had a tractor you could devote solely to mowing because they were a pain to mount and detach. IH also had a semi mounted mower, model 25V, that bolted to the drawbar and it was much more popular. You shouldn't have any trouble telling if you have all the parts. It bolts right to the drawbar, the pto attaches to the pto shaft on the tractor, and assuming the sickle bar is complete, you should be ready. I'm sure the pitman arm is rotted out after standing in the fence line but if there is enough left of the old one you can copy it to make another one. Be sure you use hard wood. Hard maple or ash are good, oak also works. Good luck with your project. I know you will be proud when it is finished.

I would bet that is why I found another sickle bar mower on wheels sitting on steel wheels right next to it. I just thought it would be super cool to have both the tractor and the mower restored.
The tractor is a restored/working tractor. I look at it as if I can't use it what good is it! But on the other hand it looks damn good right now and I would hate to scatch it! as for the pitman it looks good right now. I will use it for a patern though so I do not wreck the original.
Thanks for the help.
Chad

I have that IH mower that mounts on the H after removing the drawbar. Mine has a lever to raise it up, I was wondering if there was ever a hydraulic way to raise the cutterbar?
