How much horsepower is needed to operate a Mohawk chisel plow? It has 6 adjustable points on the rear beam and 5 adjustable points on the front beam.

Usually figure at least 10 hp per shank, if you expect to pull it at a speed good enough to do decent damage. Tried out a Mohawk once, it jigged all over the place- bought a Glencoe, runs level at a higher speed. Difference in how they hang the shanks, and the spring placement. 22 years on the Glencoe, almost no repairs.

I pulled mine with 10 shanks with my Ford 7700 for 1 year, rated at 85 hp - but I felt real sorry for the tractor, & I was not doing a good job with the plowing, more like field cultivating.

Works much better now with the TW20, 135 hp or so. That's what I would want.

How is the hitch on yours? About 75% of the Mohawks I see around here are heavily welded right under the first cross beam.
