Having just bought an old but working farm, I walk around and find stuff in the brush quite often. The other day I found a piece that I can't
quite put my finger on. It appears to be a sort of skid type frame, with a long rail of tube steel
on each side roughly 10 to 12 feet long, and shows wear on the bottom of the bars as if it has been dragged behind something along the ground. It also has about 10 floating "bars" of roughly 1/2"
steel rods that are attached at the front of the frame, but free floating at the back. At the rear is a sort of trip gate, about three feet high, and with a "FarmHand" plus serial num stamp. My initial guess is that this was something pulled behind a square baler to collect the bales and then "dump" them in a pile. Any comments?

Yes that is a Farmhand bale skid. The rear gate is opened by a rope pulled by the driver of the tractor. This permits one man to bale as well as skid the bales into groups in one operation. When my kids aren't around to help bale directly onto a wagon, I get my farmhand skid out and use it.

Bale skid we had was made of wood, with a 2x12 front crossmember, several 2x8 trailing planks with about a 6 inch space in the middle. We stacked bales on it and when we got it fully loaded, we jammed a pole in the dirt in the middle space and the bales slid off the back. It doesn't seem like that would be what you have, as the bales would be sliding on the ground, held by the trip gate. Drag forces would be very high, damage to bottom bales would be extensive.

Fred. I was the "operator" on a skid like yours for years when I was young. Still got dust in my head to prove it.

Rob,

That sounds to me like a rock picker. Does it have 2 wheels, a drawbar to one side, and hydraulics the ram may be gone)to lift the gizmo with the 10 bars? You go around the field til you come to a rock, scoop it up, then when you get a load, back up to a hedgerow, then dump. I haven't used one myself, but they all have them around here. Should be worth some bucks.

Rob, after rereading your description, I think you've got it right. I've seen those too around here, in the days when people baled on the ground and picked them up by hand. The bad news its probably worth a lot less than my first idea.

I wonder if it's a sweep rake for loose hay?
