I recently picked up a IH 3 bottom steel wheeled moldboard plow along with a few other implements from my neighbor. Would a Farmall M pull a 3 bottom plow about 4 inches deep in wheat stubble? I know the Farmll M was rated as a 3 plow tractor but I have heard from other people that the M was overated regarding how big of mold board plow it could pull. It looks to me like the mold boards are about 14 inches in width. I haven't restored the plow and tried it out yet. If I can't pull it with the M then I will use our JD D.

First M was made in 1938 as an all fuel tractor with 38 hp. now, the m`s had 3 horse power changes with the last ones as gas only tractors made in 1952 and having 50 hp. now depending on what year tractor and what soil type ypu have you will have quite a few different answers. but in hard ground 3 bottom in sand even 4 bottoms are possible Jon with my $ .o2

Had a FARMALL M back in the 70's and pulled a 3 bottom 16" John Deere plow mostly in 3rd gear with no problem. Also had a SM and pulled 4 14" plows in 2nd and some times in 3rd.

I guess if you add a lot of weight and drop down a gear or two and plow in sandy soil an M will pull almost anything. I remember my dads M and SM pulling 2-16 each in 4th gear in clay soil - just about right. He also had a 3-14 but the 2-16's had a little more clearance and cleared stuff better. He would put the SM in front of the M and see how fast the SM would catch the M.

If the plow is a 3wheel Little Genius you'll find out it's a great plow. You may however have a problem plowing just 4 inches deep without new points. As the plow wears it makes it harder to keep in the ground. A 3-14 for instance would be expected to normally run 6-7 inches deep.

2-16 was about perfect.
3-14 is probably the max but the M should pull it

assuming the M is in good shape, you should do just fine plowing a standard depth. My dad had a 48 H in say58 pulling a Moline 2 14 in the hills near the missori river and had no trouble. But when we got my uncles M in 65 at his estate sale we never pulled anything other than 2 14w with it either. We also pulled 2 14s at the same time with a 50 B and an49 A JD

The M should pull the 3 bottom in even heavy soils. I've seen a neighbor use his with a 4 bottom in old gray clay, and chugged right along.

The m will pull it probably closer to 6"-8" deep but if it were me in your position i would use the d I would rather here it go poom poom. Than listen to that m ive rode a h farmall a lot of miles. But id rather here my 60 with its straight pipe. Thanks
