I recently acquired a very old Deere & Mansur planter. It has steel wheels but almost everything else is wood including seed boxes. There are a couple pieces missing which I may have to make. Any help on pictures or info greatly appreciated.

Larry,

Sorry for not getting back to you on your e-mail but I was having trouble sending with it.

I myself have never seen a Deere-Mansur corn planter that was all wood. Do you have any pictures handy? This will help to ID what parts may be missing. Also, on the inside of the seed can lids there should be a part number and a date. If you could, please forward this information also.

I have a set-up and operators flyer for the Deere-Mansur #9 planter in my collection and it shows it to be made of all metal. (Even the seed cans.) If you would like a copy of it let me know and I'll be happy to scan it and send it your way.

If there was a Deere-Mansur planter before the #9 I have never heard of one.

Where are you located? I would like to give it the once over if I ever get in your part of the country.

Old Iron. (Gene Kidd)

To Old Iron. Thanks for your response back. Yes, I would appreciate a scan of your info. I don't have the planter home yet but will try to get pictures for you. I live near Moline, Il. This planter has iron wheels that are probably 6in. wide. Most of the planter frame is all wood and the seed boxes are wood(square). They have a metal frame around top of box and it says Deere & Mansur Moline, Il. It has 1 handle that attaches to side of either seed box that operates a slide underneath the box that drops the seed. You had a driver for the planter and a rider who operated the seed lever. I will send pictures when I can and your welcome to come look any time. Larry

Larry,

I just went to my "Encyclopedia of American Farm Implements and Antiques" by C. H. Wendeland and learned that Deere & Mansur did have a corn planter out prior to the number 9.

The picture in the book isn't the best but it looks to have the normal operators seat and a "toad stool" seat. The seed cans are square and so are the lids. By the picture I'm not able to tell if its made of wood or steel.

Here is a bit of history on your planter:

"Deere & Mansur Co., was established by the Deere intrest in 1877 to build corn planters. Twenty years later the company advertised this all-steel planter that came to a dominant position in the corn planter trade.----- By 1906, the number 9 was being offered."

Sence your near Moline, may I suggest you contact Deere at the attached address. Who knows, they may have some info for you.

Also, PLEASE DON'T PART IT OUT!!!! If you ever decide to send it down the road PLEASE give me a shout.

I did a search on Google.com for these once a few months ago and found some good pics and that there were definately wood box planters. A number 9 has round tin boxes with tin lids I think. There were cast lid planter boxes before that and the wood was before that. You might try that search and see what you come up with. Some publication I can't remember the name of.
