Does a bale thrower affect the value of a baler at auction?

Considering most people would not use a bale thrower, do you think that a baler would sell much higher at auction just because it has a thrower on it?

Thanks, guys. I live in Kansas and until I looked at your responses, and did a little more searching, I had never heard of nor seen a 'bale basket'/'thrower box'. I figured a thrower was just to toss bales on a flat wagon same as a chute would do.

Apparently everyone who has a thrower must also purchase or build one of these bale baskets. They look a lot more expensive than a plane old flat wagon. I would love to go that route, but I'm one of those small timers, and the current budget does not allow buying a basket.

James, What you are not realizing that if you use a bale basket you DO NOT use a baler with a thrower. It is standard baler even with its regular shoot removed. The bale baskets can also be bought for less than a regular wagon. I had three of them. You should be able to buy one for $1200 -$1500.00. I would definitely do this instead of bale throwers, I grew up behind one of those and the basket approach is alot nicer and easier to unload. Please get back with me if have anymore questions on these or on baler.

James,

Here is a picture of a bale basket in operation. As Tom H said a flat rack can be converted for a baler with a thrower on it but it won't hold as much as a wagon that is made for it; but it still beats picking bales up off of the ground.

My 2 bits worth,

A 'bale basket' is actually something totally different again, just to add to the confustion. :) It has a long chutre up into it, & loads bales into it without using a thrower.

It's not too hard to turn a hay rack into a bale wagon that catches bales from a thrower, just remember to put some kind of door on to unload it again. :)

You can put sides on any flat wagon for just the cost of some rough cut boards. Makes baling a one-man operation. Of course, unloading the wagon is another story.

I agree with the rest, all the farms around us use the belt or pan throwers and I would not consider a baler without a thrower. That makes them a lot more valuable to me and the farms around me, so yes they do sell higher with a thrower, a good deal higher most of the time. The only balers I see around my area that do not have throwers are the "hobby" farms that have an old baler and one flat wagon and bale a few hundred bales a year and want to do it the hard way. Very few stack wagons and no accumulators that I know of here in western Virginia.

8 out of 10 small square balers here in New Jersey and eastern Pennyslvania have throwers. Just to give you an idea, I was at a consignment sale where there were 3 New Holland 316 balers, each consigned by a different person. All were in good condition. One had a wagon chute (only 316 I've ever seen with that option) and it sold for around $2500. The next one had a 1/4 turn drop chute on it for a stack wagon, that one brought around $1000 more. The last one (which I was bidding on) had a hydraulic-drive belt thrower. I quit bidding at $4000. It sold for $5200.

I guess it all depands on what area you are talking about. In the Northeast, older used balers had better have a thrower attached, or the baler is of little value. Larger operations that use accumulators or automated bale wagons requiring a baler without a thrower generally do not buy used balers of any type. The baler market in areas with irrigated alfalfa production would be different, I am sure. Only very low volume producers are going to drop bales on the ground and pick them up by hand.

Rick, what part of the northeast are you talking about?
At 26 I've still never seen a bale thrower, and I've worked pullin hay on 5 different farms. At least in Maine and MA with these little old hilly rocky fields theres no point to 'em.
Maybe in upstate NY or someplace they got big fields, but not in New England.
