Anybody out there use a big baler (3'x3'x8' bales)? What are the most popular brands? How much hp do you really need to run one? Can you "spear" a big square bale to move it around or is it best to use forks? Thinking about baling big and processing the big bales into small ones to sell throughout the winter.

NO way would I rebale large squares. The loafs from a big square that I have been around would be like throwing cement blocks into small baler. Use large round if wanting to do that. I would forget it entirely and use acumulator or bale wagon in first place.

I can't really address all the questions about big balers but with rebaling I would suggest round bales for several reasons: 1. bulk denssity is lower in a round bale than a big sqaure, expect more leaf loss in the processing of a big bale. 2. B/c of high density you will get very heavy small squares, if you market by the bale it will hurt plus you. 3. Very easy to use a conveyer belt for unrolling, square you would prob have to grind. 4. If you are in a humid climate it is almost impossible to get hay dry enough for a big square. Max moisture in upper southeast US 20% for small square, 18% round, 15% big squares. If you can get it to 20% spend you money on an accumulator or automatic balewagon. 5. Cost; big square balers I have seen are over $30,000 used.
