I have a Ferguson Sherman spring tine cultivator which I am restoring. When I started cleaning it up I expected the base color to be grey, but it is red. It appears to be similar to the red belly Ford red, i.e., with the slight orange tint, not the Farmall red. Does this sound correct? What color would you repaint it? Are most of these cultivators red? Thanks for replies.

Unless you have the name tag that is readable you cannot tell if it was Dearborn or Ferguson because they are identical, Dearborn-Red, Ferguson- Grey, Pitsburg was also Identical and red, Have grey Ferguson and red Dearborn

The name tag IS readable. It says Ferguson - Sherman, Dearborn, MI. The only color on it is red (now pretty rusty). I think it is a Ferguson, but probably sold by a Ford dealer perhaps with an 8N, and therefore painted red. At least that's the best theory I can come up with. The original red probably would be prettier, but since it says Ferguson, and since I have plenty of the Ferguson grey, I think I will paint it grey unless you guys are sure it is supposed to be red (which doesn't appear to be the case). Thanks to all.

I have an old rigid-shank Ferguson cultivator, and while there isn't much paint left on it, what's still there is gray. No sign of primer. The original "Ferguson" i.d. plate is still on it (barely), and there is gray under that.

Remember, after 50+ years, is very likely your implement was repainted. Just like a lot of 9/2N's were repainted red/gray, so too the implements.

bought mine used last year. It had obviously been out in the weather for many years, but where there was still paint on it, the paint was "Ford Red."

Right now I've just got primer on it, but I plan on painting it red just because that's what I've got. I'd be curious to know what the 'right' answer is from the folks who know.

Thanks, Tom. My old info on the Ford red belly red is NAPA 99L - 11573. Does anyone know if that is still a good color for that purpose? I like to use hardener and mix thinner. I get better results long term than with the brands of paint that you use right out of the can.

I have a Ferguson-Sherman 2 row cultivator that came new with my grandfather's 9N, with much of its original paint. It is Ferguson gray (now we have to debate exactly what that is!). There is a hint of what might be red oxide primer under the paint. I also have a later model Ferguson tiller (field cultivator) that is gray with no primer coat. In any color literature from Ferguson I have looked at, the implements are gray.

Yeah, thanks, Tim. I thought they were grey also. But this definitely has a finish coat of red. Howsomever, I am thinking about painting is Ferguson grey anyhow. There isn't much red left on it, and I have plenty of the NAPA 99L - 3740 grey paint to do the job, expensive stuff. But I will go with the Ford red if that is truly authentic. From the responses, it appears some were each way, perhaps depending on which dealership sold it.
