Gear Head Grease Level for Brush Cutter Question

I have an old Hardee rotary brush cutter. On the gear head are two plugs. One is large and near the top of the head. My guess is that it is for filling the head with gear oil. It is about a 1/2" threaded hole at 12 o'clock. The second one is about 1/4" threaded hole and it is about 4 o'clock below the PTO shaft. My guess is this plug is the fill level.

Is this correct? How do you folks know when your gear head is at the proper level?

Also, what weight of gear oil are you using?

I can find no info on the Hardee brush cutters so any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Bill

A general rule of thumb is 1/3 full for gear boxes. For a reference look at the rearend on a truck. My father is a lubrication consultant and gave me that info.

Here is a general rule to follow when in doubt.

Most gear boxes have the oil level plug just below the level of the lowest Horizontal Shaft Seal, This helps to keep leaks at bay!

This is not always true, but most of the time it is!

Another thing! Oil level should be adjusted to be level with bottom of hole at OPERATING TEMPERATURE!

Hope this Helps, Pat

HI Bill

First I'm going to tell you what I think, Don't know for sure.

I would start with 80-90 wieght oil. If you have bad seals than maybe mix with grease. Don't run it dry if leaking.

Don't fill more than about half way, when it get hot, if over full it may blow the oil out if too full. But the gears should be covered, I would think.

Make sure the top pug is open if it has a hole it it for pressure release. It maybe spring loaded so watch for this.

Good Luck!!

I do not have a Hardee but what I have been taught is take out the smaller plug if oil is not at that level add in the top larger hole till it comes to the level of the small hole. This princple is true for a number of gear boxes on many machines. In my Bush Hog I use 80 W gear lube
