How do you measure a bottom plow? Also how much of a bottom plow can a 45 hp tractor handle. No big rocks mostly loam and a little red clay. thanks, Hunter

Like the man below said: 16" bottom = 8" deep and 14" bottom = 7" deep. Rule of thumb: You will need about 1.2 PTO HP per 1 inch of bottom: example 2 - 16" bottom is 32" of bottom X 1.2 = 38 PTO HP. Remember this is for average land.

A rule of thumb re. plowing depth , is to plow at 1/2 the width of the plow, eg. 14" bottom should be no deeper than 7"

To measure the size of the bottoms measure across the beams parallel to the rear axle of the tractor. The measurement is taken center-to-center, but it is easier to measure from one edge to corresponding edge of the next beam(left side to left side). This multiplied by the number of bottoms gives you the cutting width each pass will make.

not so with international plow chiefs. one bottom has a 2 inch offset. best is to measure point to point with a streight edge. don,t know if any others are the same.

Soil texture has more to do with how many plows you can pull than most peoplw believe. You go all the way from clay to clay loams to loams to sandy loams, and each one just gets easier. How deep you want to plow will also be a factor.

The "bottom" refers to the number of "plows" on a plow. The inches represent the amount of ground the plow cuts with each pass. I pull 3-14" with 65-85 hp in sod (really tough in heavy sod with 65, have to go slow or the tractor runs hot). Used to pull 4-14" with 100hp (can pull 5-16" easy in tilled ground). Could reballast the tractor and do better but retired my plows 3 years ago (when I quit raising tobacco), went 100% notil. Still have them, just haven't felt the "need" to use them.

When you say horsepower do you mean drawbar horsepower? I have a nieghbor with a JD R that has 44 drawbar hp. He broke some sod pulling a 3 bottom 14 in JD moldboard plow. He said that was about all the R could handle.
