IH used some model numbers on this one that confuse. In the late 1960s there was model numbers 530, 540, 550 and 560, which were respectively 3, 4, 5 and 6 bottom plows, 14 and 16 inch were available.

Later in the mid 1970s they came out with the model 510 available in 4,5 and 6 bottom 16 inch or 5 and 6 bottom 18 inch only. These were all semi-mounted plows. The confuseing part here is IH had a history of using larger numbers on later models of everything. Rarely did they use a smaller number on a later model of the same basic machine.

The 540 was available as either a 4-bottom or 5-bottom plow according to my manual. I think the 550 was 5 or 6 bottoms, and is built heavier.

Sounds like it is a 550 IH..... .Since it is a 4 bottom now I guess you would have to call it a 540....
