I just got back from a farm auction with hope's of buying a haywagon or running gear so I could build a hay wagon,at a reasonable price. Well to my suprise one old wagon went for 300.00 the other that was in a little better shape went for 550.00 they were a 6 ton running gear each and sorta swayback, rust, dry rot tires etc. Going to a auction next saturday they have 5 wagons there look like newholland running gear in fairly good shape, my ? is what is a fair price for a average cond. haywagon,we are located in Md. eastern shore it seems like I might be better off buying new running gear and building my own at these prices I have been seeing. Thanks VKG

In the Lancaster Farming newspaper, Ivan, Ammon and Noah Hoover run ads every few weeks (they have an answering service but I can't find their number right now) They build flat and high-side bodies of wood, plus sell Martin running gears. I think they want $550 for a new 6 ton gear and $300 for a new 8'x16' painted oak flat bed. A high side bed 8'x16' (7' sides) I think is $795. Next time I see their ad I'll post info. Someone else was also looking not too long ago.

A new Kory with a 20' white oak flat and used truck tires will run $1100. Running gear hits 600 plus tires.

How much are those wagons going for?! here in NE WI, my dad bought 2 8x16 wagons from a neighbor for $100 & $125 a few years back. one has an old JD 6 bolt gear, the other has just a cheap 8 ton 5 bolt under neath it. I built my own 2 years back outa 3 other wagons for about $100, paint and all. I used the stringers from an old Rex chopper rack, as well as a few 2x6's from it, and some other 2x6's and 4x4's from 2 other hay racks that fell apart. Painted up an old better built gear, bought a few more 2x6 and I had a brand new hay wagon for less than 100 bux. Not a bad deal in my book. Just a side note, those old better built's pull down the highway better than any of my other wagons that are newer- 65 mph without the slightest sway.
