Would anyone out there tell me about their experiences with a corn shredder and making shocks with a corn binder?

Also, I have a McCormick 4A steel shredder and it works fine, but if someone has one for parts let me know, I would like to buy or fabricate the safety clutch or belt clutch mechanism that hooks to the platform.

Dad cut corn with a horse-drawn McCormick binder. The bundles were really hard for us kids to handle, especially with a pitchfork. We borrowed a McCormick shredder a couple of times and blew the fodder into a snowfence crib to make a dry silage. Mostly we just spread some bundles out on the ground each day and let the cattle pick through them. We had a special 3-sickle section knife on a long handle to cut off the bundles that were frozen to the ground in the wintertime. The stalks were all waste; lots of work for the little amount of food value.
