Have found a Bush Hog offset disk plow; says Model No 145, Serial No 11-00-477. About 6 1/2 foot cut. 9 disks in each gang. 3 bearings on each gang. Disks about 22 inches. It is a pull type with cylinder to raise it. Anyone have any experience with this offset? What quality? When made? Any info appreciated.

Offset discs have their place, but they are not the best in all situations. We pull a 9 foot brillian offset disc with 24 inch blades and it takes 100hp tractor to pull it through our clay soil if you let it dig. We also have a 19ft Athens double offset disc with 26 inch blades and I can pull it with the same tractor and cover much more ground at a time, but it doesnt dig like the offset does. I find the offset disc useful to get crop residue in the ground and break up the top of the dirt, but it will compact a field pretty fast if it is a little wet or if you use it too much in one field it will create a hard pan in the soil fast. This type of disc also tends to berm up the soil and not leave a very level surface, even when it is working good. I typically run a deep ripper or a field cultivator and only use the offset disc if it looks like the field cultivatior will not take care of all the residue on the top before planting. I am not a big fan of discs as a primary tillage tool, like the offset discs are made for.

Just my 2 cents for today

I have a 10' bushhog offset. Very heavy duty disc. I pull it with a 70 horse Oliver. Can't say when made. Like it OK eccept in hard pack. Doesn't want to go in on one side, but a couple of passes in different directions and it cuts. Probly needs the disc's rolled but I don't use it that much.

Pete,
Thanks for your help. I learned something. What do you mean by getting the disks "rolled"? Is that resharpening them, and who does that? Is your offset a Model 145 or 146 by chance? Bush Hog told me they made these two models.

Thanks Bill. From your post, it sounds like this disk may be just what I need. It is 6 1/2 also and my tractor is 66 PTO HP. So it would be a full load. If I can buy it worth the money, I will use for oat fields in the fall.
What do you mean about the second pass "with the wheel up"?
